Domestic · External Wall Insulation (EWI)
External wall insulation (EWI) for homes in Ipswich
External wall insulation wraps the outside of your house in insulation boards and finishes it with render. It keeps the warmth in without taking space from your rooms, and gives the house a new outside finish at the same time.

When it’s the right choice
- Solid-walled houses that can’t have cavity insulation
- Homes where you’d rather not lose room space inside
- Houses already due a new render
- Extensions and outbuildings that feel cold
How the system works
- Insulation boards
- Boards are fixed to the outside of the wall with adhesive and mechanical fixings. The board type and thickness are chosen to suit the wall.
- Reinforced base coat
- A base coat with embedded mesh goes over the boards to make a strong, crack-resistant surface.
- Render finish
- A thin-coat render, often silicone, finishes the system in your chosen colour and texture.
What the work involves
- 1
Assessment
We look at the walls, roof overhang, windows, doors, pipes and anything fixed to the house, and check whether there are planning considerations to look into.
- 2
Detailing plan
Window sills, reveals, eaves, pipes and meter boxes all need careful detailing so water is kept out. We agree this before starting.
- 3
Install
Access goes up, boards are fixed, the base coat and mesh applied, then the render finish.
- 4
Hand over
Fittings are reinstated, access is removed and the site is cleared.

Things to know
- Planning and permissions
- Changing the outside of a house can need permission in some cases, such as conservation areas or listed buildings. You should check with the local council; we can help you work out what to ask.
- Weather and access
- This is outside work done in stages, so the programme depends on weather and scaffold access.
- No promised savings
- Results vary by house. We won’t quote annual savings, EPC changes or grants we haven’t confirmed for your property.
- What affects the price
- Wall area, number of openings, board thickness, scaffold, and how many fittings need moving.
- Choose a complete wall system
- EWI is not just boards with render over them. Fixings, base coats, mesh, finish and junction details must work together as the specified system. Existing damp, exposure, fire requirements, boundaries and roof overhangs can affect the design and suitability.
Questions about external wall insulation (ewi)
It includes a render finish, but underneath there is a full insulation system. Ordinary render alone doesn’t insulate.
Ask us about your projectThe wall gets thicker, so windows sit a little deeper. Reveals are insulated and finished neatly.
Ask us about your projectSchemes change. We don’t claim eligibility for any grant; check current schemes with the official provider before relying on one.
Ask us about your projectUsually that’s best for a consistent finish, but we’ll discuss phasing if needed.
Ask us about your projectThe finished wall moves outward. Pipes, lights, vents, sills and other fittings may need extending or repositioning. Their junctions must shed water and retain any required ventilation, so photographs of every elevation and its fittings are useful when quoting.
Ask us about your projectInsulating an existing wall can involve Building Regulations, and external changes may also need planning or listed-building consent. Requirements depend on the building and work proposed. Confirm these with building control and any relevant designer before installation.
