Lime plastering and lime render in Ipswich
Lime plaster and lime render can suit traditional solid walls that need compatible, moisture-permeable finishes. The right material depends on the wall, existing coatings and moisture conditions. We assess lime repairs and replastering so the new work suits the building rather than covering an unresolved problem.

When it’s the right choice
- Period cottages and solid-walled houses
- Timber-framed homes with lath and plaster
- Traditional walls with incompatible coatings or moisture concerns that need assessment
- Patch repairs to existing lime plaster
- Homeowners wanting a soft, traditional finish
Lime work we carry out
- Internal lime plaster
- Base and finishing coats in lime, with the softer, slightly uneven character suited to older rooms.
- External lime render
- Lime render for solid walls that need to stay breathable, finished in a texture to suit the building.
- Repairs and patching
- Cutting out failed areas and repairing in matching material, rather than replastering a whole wall unnecessarily.
- Removing unsuitable materials
- Where cement or gypsum is trapping moisture, we can discuss taking it off and replacing it with lime.

What the work involves
- 1
Understand the building
We look at what the wall is made of, what’s on it now and where moisture is coming from.
- 2
Repair or replace
We recommend the least amount of work that solves the problem.
- 3
Apply in coats
Lime goes on in thinner coats with time between, and needs protecting from fast drying and frost.
- 4
Aftercare
Lime should be finished with breathable paints such as limewash or suitable mineral paints.

Things to know
- It takes longer
- Lime cures more slowly than gypsum and is weather-sensitive. Programmes need to allow for this.
- Not a damp cure
- Lime helps walls dry out, but it doesn’t fix leaks, high ground levels or failed gutters. Those need sorting too.
- Listed buildings
- Listed homes may need consent before work. Requirements are site-specific and need checking with the council.
- What affects the price
- Area, the condition of the background, whether old material needs removing, and access.
- Drying is not the same as curing
- Lime products do not all cure in the same way. The binder, coat thickness and conditions determine the programme. Fresh lime work needs protection from frost and rapid drying, and the decoration must be compatible with the chosen lime system and the building.
Questions about lime work
Some dense cement coatings and impermeable finishes can restrict drying in traditional walls. Material choice depends on the complete wall and its condition, not age alone. We assess the existing build-up before recommending lime.
Ask us about your projectGenerally it isn’t a good idea. We’d usually remove unsuitable material first.
Ask us about your projectBreathable finishes like limewash or mineral paint. Modern vinyl paints can seal the surface.
Ask us about your projectYes, we can assess and repair lath and plaster ceilings and walls where the laths are sound.
Ask us about your projectNot by itself. A compatible lime finish can help a traditional wall manage moisture, but leaking gutters, ground levels, rain penetration and other moisture sources still need addressing. Assess the cause before deciding what material should be removed.
Ask us about your projectFollow the lime and paint suppliers' guidance for the actual products. Curing, drying and suitable decoration timing vary with binder and conditions. Breathable limewash or an appropriate mineral finish may suit, but do not assume every paint labelled breathable is compatible.
